Flat blaze could be arson - police
ABOUT 12 people were evacuated from their Newport homes following a suspected arson attack in a storage area last night.
Gwent Police today said it was believed the fire in Caerau Crescent was started deliberately.
It was started in a small area underneath the block of flats.
Newport city councillor Laura Buchanan-Smith, who lives nearby, was among those who raised the alarm just before 10pm.
She then alterted the people inside the block of flats.
"My main concern was the gas outlets which go into the downstairs area," said Cllr Buchanan-Smith.
A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said there was a fire in the underground storage area.
Firefighters brought it under control, using a hose reel jet, in around 30 minutes.
A Gwent Police spokeswoman said it was a small fire.
