'I was raped and dumped' - woman tells court

A YOUNG woman told a court today she was raped and dumped in an isolated lane near Newport.

The alleged victim, in her late twenties, told Cardiff crown court that Paul Brand, 20, dragged her from a car by her hair and pushed her to the ground in a secluded lane near Llanwern golf club.

She said he ordered her to remove her jeans, and raped her.

She said: "I was scared. I just did whatever he wanted. I felt my life was in his hands. I didn't know where I was."

Brand, of Buttermere Way, Newport, faces charges of kidnapping, rape and theft.

His former school friend and work colleague Lee Chapman, 19, of Piper Close, Newport, is charged with kidnapping.

Jennet Treharne, prosecuting, said the two men picked up their alleged victim between the Dodger pub and Newport Hotel near Chepstow Road after cruising around the city centre during the early hours of October 14 "looking out for girls who had been drinking".

The woman said Brand and Chapman promised her a lift to her home in the city.

She and Chapman began arguing. The woman said she kissed Brand because she wanted to be taken home.

But instead, she said, Brand drove towards the Coldra roundabout, ignoring her pleas to be let out of the Renault Megane.

She said Chapman asked her to perform a sex act before suggesting they dump her in Wentwood Forest.

After the alleged rape, she said, the pair drove off laughing.

She later managed to find the roadside and flag down a passing vehicle around 6.15am.

The alleged victim said she had been out drinking in the city centre since 6.30pm the previous day.

Ms Treharne, prosecuting, said DNA tests confirmed Brand had had sex with the woman.

He was arrested at his home, where officers recovered the woman's mobile phone.

She added: "Having kidnapped her, Brand then drove her to an isolated spot where he then raped her and stole her handbag and it's contents, we say, keeping them as a trophy."

Ms Treharne said Brand told police the woman had initially flagged his car down and consented to sex.

Chapman, she said, told officers he made no references to sex during the journey.

He said the woman suddenly "went mental" and was making out that Brand had raped her.
