How many miles of barriers do you want to pay for ? every mile of every road down by the reens? be real its just not practicable

No I would agree with naughty and nice on this one, they need some barriers along that stretch! To many lives lost already on that road.

There [italic]are[/italic] barriers on the corners. Without knowing any more about this incident let's not jump to conclusions eh?

The accident was not adjacent to a road. It was in the pub car park. The gentleman went to reverse his vehicle and went forwards instead, through the hedge and into the reen by the seawall. Conclusions well and truly jumped to...as usual

Don’t know if anyone remembers. But a few boys went to Cardiff for the day. Missed the last train home.
They decided to steel a car from Cardiff. They drove threw the lanes. The oldest person who should have had more sense, at his age
At the time was in his 30s. Decided to be a passenger and allowed the younger person I think 17 to drive
While driving threw the lanes the car over turned blocking the doors.
These reens are like comb shaped
Basically passengers got out threw the back window and the driver died
After that it would be a great idea to put barriers up.
You always get young idiots taking those roads like there rally drivers.
Ive had a few near misses myself dodging young idiots
Keep a hammer in your car if you’re a regular user of those lanes

Why waste money and erect barriers? Why not just teach people to drive instead?
I just love the way people would rather blame the road for causing THEM to crash.

There is no such thing as a dangerous road - [bold]FACT[/bold]. It's the people who drive on them that cause the accidents.

Of course there are such things as dangerous roads!!
Black ice, spilt diesel all sorts of things can contribute to an accident.

I think the point is that it is inappropriate driving that leads to an accident, be that the person who drives badly, or the person who is trying to avoid them. A road is only as dangerous as its drivers and their ability to ascertain potential dangers and act appropriately.
People always lay blame for missing barriers and speed limits, but these features don't stop accidents, they mitigate some, [bold]not all[/bold], consequences...
This road is ancient, in its history, an extremely low percentage of its users will have come unstuck along it - is that dangerous road or driving without due care and attention???
A Vehicle Restraint system provides a driver with a false confidence. They do not stop all accidents of this type, and in some cases make accidents worse by disabling the use of doors on the vehicle. It is well known in the road safety community that "crash barriers" and similar will have the effect of raising the 85th percentile speed on a stretch of road. Psychologically, many of these people's observation will stop at the barriers, and consequently any given motorist will feel safer, and therefore drive proportionately faster. The use of a lower speed limit doesn't work either, as many motorists question speed limit use. The nanny state would impose a 30 or 40 mph limit on the lighthouse road and run safety fences the entire length.
This is not appropriate - aside from the cost of placing and maintaining the barrier and limit signs, the change of driver perception along this road would greatly negate the provisions made, as drivers would be more likely to drive in a reckless manner to pull manouvers around those sensible enough to follow limits...
Truth is all unfamiliar road layouts are dangerous... accept that and drive at a speed sensible for what you can and, indeed, can't see... [bold]Nothing improves safety better than driving in this manner...[/bold]

How does a car fall into a reen?
Surely it would have had to be driven into it?? [bold]Hope the man is[/bold] [bold] ok[/bold] and yes I do agreee that some barriers need to be put in place to stop anything else falling in.

I don't like to judge people, but the mup...sorry, the people who are against any kind of safety improvement are either off their heads or live smack bang in the area that would possibly have the safety work done? and therefore don't wish their pretty little area ruined by barriers to prevent death or injury in the future? Please disagree with me if i am wrong??? Just interests me why normal human beings would want to see more accidents? is it that boring down where you live?

I live in Pontypool and not this area of Newport.
At the end of the day a DRIVER causes an accident. NOT a road, NOT spilt fuel, NOT black ice, NOT a lack of a barrier.....
If drivers actually paid attention to their driving the ammount of accidents would decrease.
People acutally need to be taught how to drive. Forget the DSA b******s. I mean taught to IAM or ROSPA standards.
For example, do you know about the limit point of a corner? Do you know how to tell if you are driving on black ice? Do you know what to do if you aquaplane? Do you know how to control a car during a skid? Do you know about the box overtake? Do you know what I am talking about when I say "I am positioning my self in position 3 for this left hand bend"?
Drivers need to be taught these when learning to drive and retested every five or so years. That is the ONLY way to make our roads safer. Driver education.
