Team Calzaghe trio ready for return to the ring
EWBRIDGE fighting trio Enzo Maccarinelli, Bradley Pryce and Gavin Rees are all set for a return to the ring in June, with former world champion Rees in the frame to fight Amir Khan, it has emerged.
Commonwealth light-middleweight champion Pryce, nicknamed Sugar Sweet' will put his USA visa nightmare behind him and defend his title as the chief support on a bill at the Birmingham National Indoor Arena on June 21.
However, the Blackwood boy might not be the only Gwent representation towards the top of that bill.
It has been reported that former WBA light-welterweight champion Rees is to finally meet Khan as the headline bout, several months after the Argus exclusively revealed that the two men were keen on finally clashing.
Rees is on a shortlist to challenge Khan, British super-featherweight champion Michael Gomez and Scot Ricky Burns the other candidate.
Further good news for fight fans in these parts is that Khan still has one bout left on his contract with ITV, so terrestrial TV viewers will potentially get to watch Rees and Pryce for free.
"To be honest I don't care where, who or when I fight, I am just desperate to get back into the ring," Pryce told the Argus.
"It's been a really frustrating year for me and I want to get back to what I do best, fighting and winning!
"The better the quality of the opponent the happier I will be and if Gavin ends up fighting Amir Khan then that will be the icing on the cake."
Joe Calzaghe's stablemate Rees has long been linked with a clash with his promotional rival Khan and could get his chance despite losing his world title to Andreas Kotelnik in Cardiff in March.
Meanwhile BBC Sport Wales reports that Swansea's Enzo Maccarinelli, also a member of Enzo Calzaghe's Newbridge stable, is set for a return to the ring on June 28.
An opponent and even a venue has yet to be confirmed, but Maccarinelli has expressed a desire to fight at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea.
