IT'S been a year of misery for little Harrison Williams and his family.

Twelve months ago, the Newport tot was diagnosed with leukaemia - and he spent his last birthday and Christmas in hospital.

But now, as he prepares to celebrate his fourth birthday next week, there is new hope for the youngster from Bettws who is on the road to recovery.

The tot, known as Harry, was diagnosed with the disease on April 2, 2007, days before his third birthday, a milestone he was forced to celebrate from his hospital bed in Cardiff.

"He is a tough kid," said his father Graham Williams, 29.

Harry, who lives on Monnow Way, lost his hair following bouts of chemotherapy and was also prescribed a course of strength building steroids.

"Everybody who gets diagnosed has to have one course of intensive treatment but Harry had to have two courses, both lasted seven weeks," Mr Williams said.

Harry's treatment left him unable to play with friends or take part in the usual activities of a child his age.

His illness also meant he spent weeks in hospital and missed out on proper birthday and Christmas celebrations.

Harry was nominated for last year's Argus Christmas Toy Giveaway for his bravery by Grandmother Vera Williams.

Unfortunately for Harry, he was too ill to attend the party we organised in December.

"Christmas was hard, he was quite ill and on his intensive course and we couldn't go out and see anyone or have people over," Mr Williams said.

But now Harry's immune system is toughening up and his hospital visits have been reduced to once every four weeks.

"His chances now are really, really good," said his dad.

"I think with what he's been through he is now just getting on with it.

Mr Williams said his son is now looking forward to starting school in September, where he will join his older sister Rebecca, 6 at Malpas Church in Wales Infants.

Harry turns four on April 6, and there is set to be a family party on Monnow Way.
