Man in court on child sex charge

11:52am Friday 5th January 2007

A GWENT man was remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with a sex attack on a girl aged under six on New Year's Day.

Darren James Rose, 20, of Duke Street, Abertillery, is accused of carrying out the assault in the town.

Wearing a light-coloured T-shirt and tracksuit bottoms, Rose spoke in the dock only to confirm his name, address and age, when he appeared before Newport magistrates.

He faces a charge of committing a sexual assault on the night of January 1.

Prosecutor Ian Griffiths outlined the allegation made against Rose to the court.

An application for bail made by Rose's solicitor, Lynda Rhead , was refused.

He was remanded in custody by magistrate chairman, Geoffrey Davies, and his case was committed to the crown court where he is due to appear next week.
